HAMMOND RIVER
Angling Association

Education

HRAA’s birth was through recreation, and our training style continues to be hands-on. Using an experiential model, we teach that non-consumptive recreational use of our natural resources is a positive step for the Hammond River environment, the province of New Brunswick and the world!

Our education goals encompass specific local initiatives like wild Atlantic salmon preservation and global issues revolving around water issues. Participants are encouraged to apply local awareness within a larger context.

Students are taught current field techniques embracing “Better Management Practises”, using proper scientific equipment to provide positive environmental learning. One of our staff trainers once said, “If I can get them to fall in love with the river, the rest of my job will be easy”.

HRAA educational programs focus on many levels: elementary students, middle & high school students, post-secondary and adults. At each level, our goal is to draw participants more deeply into understanding, awareness and interest in local issues with global ramifications. HRAA presents interesting and pertinent classes and courses to a wide variety of users from informal fly-tying classes to professional water resource training development for professional teachers.

We train participants how to accomplish specific activities, such as angling, kayaking, fly-tying or tree-planting. Every training module contains embedded learning outcomes that drive the course, so that participants learn the vocabulary, the science and the environmental raison d’etre behind an activity. In addition, we encourage participants to become more involved in the stewardship of their environment, either locally at the grassroots level or on any other larger playing field.
