ATLANTIC SALMON POPULATION ASSESSMENTS
Scientific name: Salmo salar
SARA Status: Under consideration
COSEWIC Status: Endangered (2010)
DID YOU KNOW?
Salmo Salar means "the leaper"! These fish can jump 12-14 ft high!
The outer Bay of Fundy (oBoF) Atlantic salmon population is in decline. Over the last 15 years, this population has declined by 64%. At sea mortality is believed to pose the greatest threat to this population. The Hammond River houses 1 of 20 remaining oBoF salmon populations. Since 1977, HRAA staff and volunteers have tracked the oBoF salmon population in the Hammond River system. Through our continued research efforts and long-term population monitoring, the HRAA has bettered our understanding of this population and continues to manage the landscape to protect this species.
