Seemingly untouched riparian zones are easy to find in the upper Hammond River watershed. Here, in Hanford Brook, farmland is the biggest threat to riparian zones and the impact of a fractured riparian zone has an effect downstream.
The floodplains of the Hammond River are vast and beautiful, speckled with old growth trees such as silver maple. By filtering & storing water, wetlands play an important role in maintaining water quality in brooks and rivers. Wetlands are also are the most productive & bio-diverse ecosystems in our watershed.
