September 19th, 2022 - Carbon Capture Collective - What is Carbon?

It's National Forest Week! This is a time to celebrate our forests for what they are and what they do, making it the perfect time to talk about our Carbon Capture Collective project funded by WWF. This is the first post in a week-long series collaboration with Kennebecasis Watershed Restoration Committee and Belleisle Watershed Coalition ! We'll get into the role of forests in carbon sequestration, but first, the basics: What is carbon? Let's start off with some fun facts!

- Carbon gets its name from the Latin word carbo, meaning "coal"

- Coal is formed when dead plant matter is subjected to millions of years of heat and pressure

- Carbon makes up 18% of the human body

- We've been able to use carbon dating to determine the age of fossils and bones
