September 30th, 2021 - Our office will be closed for the day today, September 30th
Our office will be closed for the day today, September 30th, as we stand in solidarity and honor Truth and Reconciliation Day
Between 1830 and 1998, there were 140 federally run residential schools- over 7 generations of Indigenous youth were forcibly removed from their homes, and thousands never returned home. Survivors of these schools face unimaginable intergenerational trauma as a result of this cultural genocide.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission ran from 2008-2015, releasing its final report with 94 Calls To Action, including Action 80, calling for a federal statutory day of commemoration, to "ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process" (TRC 2015).
What can you do to honor Truth and Reconciliation Day?
• Wear an Orange shirt (support Indigenous-led designs) • Read the TRC's 94 Calls to Action • Listen to survivors' stories and reflect on how you are still benefiting from colonialism in Canada today • Write to Federal authorities to implement more of the TRC's Calls to Action • Write to your Provincial authorities requesting that New Brunswick also respect today as a Provincial holiday of commemoration
