October 13th, 2021 - Upham Mine Discharge Brook
Part of our monitoring program for the Upham Gypsum mine includes electrofishing the mine discharge brook!
Staff perform habitat assessments, determining if the area offers suitable substrate, water flow, water quantity and quality, for salmonid habitat. Electrofishing is another tool in our research and monitoring toolbox- should the Upham Gypsum mine have issues with water quality exceedances, one of the first things to be affected will be the fish!
During our 2021 survey of the mine discharge brook, we encountered 7 different fish species, with a whopping total fish count of 111! We will continue our monitoring program over the course of the life of the Upham Gypsum mine, and we hope to see the fish populations continue to thrive in the mine discharge brook!
