There are 6 main types of soil. The best way to identify your soil type is by touching it. Try adding water and rolling it in between your hands. Is your soil gritty, soapy, slippery or slimy? These are all telling characteristics of your soil type.

Soil can be 100% clay, silt, or sand, or can be a combination of all three materials. The composition of these particles changes many important properties of soil such as its water retention. Soil scientists created 12 different categories for soil based on the percentages of these particles. To determine which of the 12 categories they are working with, soil scientists use a soil texture triangle.
