FANTASTIC FERNS
Let's learn about some fantastic ferns!
Ostrich Fern (Fiddle Head)
You may see this tasty fern curled up in a ball in your local market. These tasty green spirals are called fiddleheads because they resemble the head of a violin. If you head out into the wetlands in search of this snack, it is important to be very cautious. There are multiple ferns who, in their young stages resemble fiddle heads but may be toxic. Some ferns that resemble fiddle heads include but are not limited to, the cinnamon fern, and the wood fern. As you can see from the pictures, there are tiny little differences that could very well go unnoticed.
LOOKALIKES
The two most important things to remember when looking for fiddleheads are: the material on the front of the stalk sound have a deep concave with no debris or leaves coming off, and the thin plastic like film on the outside out the spiraled head.
