HERONS & EGRETS
Let's learn about some master fisher-birds!
Heron vs. Egret
All members of the family Ardeidae can be referred to as “herons”. That being said, species in this family that are primarily white are almost always referred to as “egrets”. Herons are typically larger in size and have much shaggier plumage. Both birds are tall and excellent at catching fish. They can be difficult to distinguish sometimes so it’s a good idea to bring some binoculars if you go out looking for them!
Below are some videos that can help you identify the species of heron you’re observing.
